What is skin chafing?

Chafing is a skin condition that occurs due to constant friction in between body parts caused due to tight clothing, running, involving in physical activities, change in weather conditions, etc. Rubbing for an extended period can causes a burning or stinging sensation in your skin, leading to a mild rash that is slightly reddish.

If the skin-chafing condition is very severe, some people may even experience bleeding, swelling, and crusting of the skin. Skin-chafing generally occurs in inner-thighs, underarms, buttocks, nipples, feel, or even in vulva.

People who suffer from skin-chafing are the only ones that truly understand the pain and discomfort that arises from it. Although it is a common skin condition, letting it go unnoticed can lead to severe conditions making it difficult to even perform your daily tasks!

What are some common causes that lead to chafing?

Chafing can occur because of numerous reasons when skin cells break down due to too much constant friction, resulting in skin-chafing. Here are some most common causes of chafing:

  • Breastfeeding

New nursing moms often experience chafing on the nipples due to the moisture around them and rubbing from wearing nursing bras.

  • Riding bicycle

While riding a bike, you must have noticed how your inner thighs and buttocks rub against the bicycle seat. The repeated rub can cause your skin to chafe.

  • Wearing tight clothing

Wearing underwear like bras and undies can constantly rub your skin and cause chafing. It is always advised to wear loose clothing when possible, especially during the summertime when you're sweating, and certain areas need to have airflow.

  • Running

Runners often suffer from chafing because of the repetitive activity of running that causes their things to rub against each other.

  • Diapers

Chafing also affects babies. Diapers that are too tight or small for the baby or not changed frequently can cause skin-chafing on the baby's buttocks.

These are just a few common examples of things that cause skin-chafing daily. However, any constant rubbing of your skin against skin or clothing and moisture can lead to skin chafing.
